Nokia N8 demo of Plug and Touch – transform any screen into a touchscreen.

Nokia Plug and Touch is a gesture-based technology from Beijing’s Nokia Research Center (NRC). It can transform any screen into a touchscreen. Marshall from NRC shows us this technology direct from Nokia World in London. He uses the Nokia N8 connected to an HDTV via the HDMI output. The gestures are recognized by the Nokia N8′s camera. Currently, only two gestures are recognized: click and vertical scrolling. This research project is important because they’re trying to figure out how to take the touchscreen experience away from the touchscreen. As they see more development in augment reality and even 3D UI, they are studying how to leverage the sensor from the camera to track gestures so we can interact with the content. Imagine interacting with 3D UI in the air like in the Iron Man movie! Plug and Touch is a research prototype to help them create new products for future gesture-based experiences.

Congratulations to NRC! Very cool project. Iiked to finally hear some more details on how it works. Now I wanted to know if it just compares subsequent captured frames, or if it generates a background model to subtract…
